A handover can leave you with several keys and little certainty about who has copies. Start with the external doors you control and check which keys operate them. Tell us whether you want a change for peace of mind, a repair to a known fault, or both.
Include the front, back and side entrances rather than assuming one new front-door lock covers everything. Mark any door that is already difficult to close or secure. The work could involve changing a cylinder while retaining compatible handles, or a different repair altogether. Explain any shared entrance separately and confirm that you have permission for the alterations you are requesting.
Ask which hardware is being supplied, how many keys are included and whether the door will operate differently. If you want a particular finish, say so early. Keep your insurer’s exact wording available where a lock specification is required. Once the work is agreed, decide who will receive the keys and check that the new arrangement works for the people living in the home.
